Dear Madukkurians,

I wish to shed light on the current microeconomics of our beloved town and the surrounding villages of Madukkur. Our community primarily relies on two sources of income: agriculture and foreign remittance.

Unfortunately, the recent Kaja cyclone has uprooted numerous coconut trees from our farms, significantly impacting our agricultural sector. The current market price of coconuts is at an all-time low, making it difficult for farmers to cover cultivation costs. Additionally, the drought conditions this year have hindered agricultural productivity, depriving people of their usual income from farming.

On the other hand, the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted job opportunities abroad, affecting the flow of foreign remittance to our town. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, coupled with economic instability in European countries and the downturn of the Chinese economy, further exacerbates challenges related to job security and wages. Furthermore, the advancement of AI technology presents another obstacle to employment prospects.

While government schemes offer some financial relief, the assistance provided, such as Rs. 1000 for poor families, is minimal and does little to boost consumer spending. Moreover, the presence of TASMAC liquor shops and the implementation of GST contribute to a net balance of zero for many individuals and families.

In summary, our community is facing significant hardships in meeting daily needs, let alone saving for the future. It is imperative for us to break free from traditional thinking and strive for an improved lifestyle. Though the challenges may seem daunting, let us remain hopeful and work towards a brighter future.
